Stress is a word I hear often in my office. “Food is stressful”, or “I am so stressed that I find myself grabbing food and not thinking about what I am eating”. While you may not realize it at first, stress has a direct relationship to our health and food choices. Stress can lead to weight gain and weight loss. Stress can also develop negative habits in our lives such as overeating that can cause long term negative consequences.

If you are stressed about what to eat or if you eat because you are stressed there is a way to overcome this so that you can choose foods that are healthy without stress and learn ways to handle stress without food. Here are three practical ways to handle stress:

  1. Pray. God tells us in Philippians 4:4-7 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  2. Fellowship with other beleviers and ask for their prayer
  3. Walk. Take time to walk and meditate on the Word of God so that you are able to refocus your mind on the things of Christ. This will give clarity to your thoughts.
